Isurumuniya
Isurumuniya is a Buddhist temple located in the city of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. It is known for its beautiful rock carvings, including the famous Isurumuniya Lovers carving, depicting a man and woman in a tender embrace.
The temple was built during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BC and was originally named Gokanna Vihara. Over the centuries, it was renovated and rebuilt under several different kings, with the most recent restoration carried out in the late 19th century.
Aside from the famous rock carving, Isurumuniya also houses several other important Buddhist relics, including a large stupa, a Buddha statue, and several ancient inscriptions. The temple is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists, as well as a popular tourist attraction.
